Myofunctional Therapy

What is myofunctional therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is used to correct the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles. It involves strengthening of the tongue and orofacial muscles by teaching individuals how to engage these muscles appropriately. It is a non-invasive, no-risk approach that we recommend when we notice the tongue and facial muscles are causing functional issues for the patient. This neuro re-education is based on principles of neuroplasticity ( “use or or lose it”) and functional matrix ( bones respond to all levels of force). It is a program that includes face and tongue exercises as well as behavior modification techniques to promote proper tongue position, improved breathing, chewing, and swallowing. The effectiveness of myofunctional therapy depends upon patient compliance with the program.
